Review of 14 Blades (2010) by Stephen Y — 30 Oct 2010
Kate T.: "Why are you all by yourself?".
Donnie: "Baby, I'm depressed. I'm so good. Whoever messes with me..dies. Leaving me all alone.".
Kate T.: "Yeah. Chasing people isn't easy either. You have to get to know who you're chasing and when you kill them, its like killing your friend.".
Donnie: "Whatever. Let's get it on!".
[After fighting for a while...].
Donnie: "Baby, you're doing that Matrix "ghosting" thing every time you strip. I like that! But damn, you nasty! Sorry to "hit it and quit it" but I gotta run!".
I rate this movie 3.25 stars and probably 3.75 stars for the action sequences.
14 Blades is a long feeling movie. Taking place almost entirely in the desert, the movie looks to have been filmed in Xinjiang or perhaps even on the border of Pakistan. That said while the scenery was interesting, the convoluted storyline with multiple subplots was hard to follow.
Acting was on par with other Chinese films of this genre but I give special mention to Wei Zhao, whose seriously growing on me. Not straight up beautiful but she has a quality to her that's hard to grasp. As for Donnie Yen, I'm still not a fan but he gains 1.0% more in my book. Personally, I think Chun Wu will probably have a greater following over time. Lastly, Kate Tsui might have been played her role well but she's different looking. Don't know what it is but I can't say she's pretty.
As for the title, yes, there are 14 blades in Donnie Yen's box but that box does so much more. Its was like Batman's utility belt and at times a little far fetched. Then again, these movies seem to be getting a little more unreal or over top each time.
All in all, the action sequences were the best part of the film. There was some CGI, slow motion capture, and great choreography which made up for a somewhat lukewarm or confusing storyline. Still, I recommend this movie. Especially for those who like watching this genre, as the movie did have its entertaining moments. Not the best in class but decent. It will certainly help pass the time.
