Review of 13th (2016) by Anthony K — 15 Jan 2017
My problem with documentaries is that they tend to be incredibly one sided by definition. In order for the filmmaker to make their point, it's vital that they present their argument in full - which unfortunately means they can't much explore counter arguments.
And 13th is certainly guilty of that. But its subject matter is capital-I important, and Ava Duvernay does things visually that kept me totally engaged. So ultimately 13th is a great film, and should be seen by everyone, while mostly managing to avoid feeling like an "eat your vegetables" type of movie.
