Review of 13 Sins (2014) by Tracy F — 05 Aug 2014
Believing itself to be a rather witty and original terrifying suspense thriller, 13 Sins tells the tale of an unlucky salesman named Elliott (Mark Webber - Goodbye World) who is given the chance to change his life after a cryptic phone call asks him to play a risky and thrilling dangerous game of completing tasks in order to receive monetary payouts after the successful completion of each one.
Elliott is awarded $1000 easily enough after killing a fly and the ease of such a windfall piques his interest into finding out what comes next. If Elliott ever has enough of a task or fails to complete one, he loses all of his money he had earned up to that point .
.. so what will Elliott do and how far will he allow himself to go to earn over $6 million?! It is an interesting little question to pose but the film doesn't work for a number of reasons. We never know how the unseen man of the phone knows and sees everything involving Elliott.
And ... Elliott is threatened with losing all of his money; but as he is notified of deposits into his accounts throughout the course of the film ... that money is already his. The filmmakers have some fun with the far-out situation and parts of the film are guiltily thrilling but my brain kept me from liking it because of the plot holes.
Rutina Wesley ('True Blood') and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) co-star.
