Review of 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016) by Steve W — 30 Jan 2016
Michael Bay is a household name, regardless of how you feel about him. He's known for bombastic overblown and exciting action pictures, with plenty of explosions. He gets the action bits right in 13 Hours, but the movie suffers from pacing and cliches.
Such as, a scene in which all the soldiers are talking with their loved ones, which is about as manipulative as one can get in a story. Writer Chuck Hogan adapts a book, but the cliches are forefront, such as overly gung-ho bravado tough guys who scoff in the face of danger, and David Costabile, who is literally just a strict opposition force with no dimension whatsoever.
His only purpose is to disagree with the soldiers at all times, for added conflict that is not needed. The movie's action sequences are plentiful and thrilling, but the movie's emotional core is not quite right.
You could do a lot worse than 13 Hours, but its not the new war film classic, not by a long shot.
