Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Don W — 01 Oct 2011
Deserving comparison with Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai' as far as script and shot composition are concerned, this movie celebrates the last hurrah for the samurai code through their heroism against impossible odds.
Takashi Miike spends first two acts in establishing the characters to make the last act of 40-minute action more perceivable. Fighting scenes in the ordinary action movie are boring, but here general noisy riotous fight is broken down into structured sketches.
We understand why many of the 13 assassins behave as they do under threat of death and we respect that. And this is the triumph of the movie.
