Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Mloy X — 08 Oct 2011
A WICKEDLY AWESOME EPIC FILM from "Audition" director, Takeshi Miike. Kurosawa would be so proud and Tarantino would be giddy with envy. I'm a big fan of Koji Yakusho (Nobu from Memoirs of a Geisha) who plays lead samurai, Shinzaemon Shimada and an instant fan of Tsuyoshi Ihara who plays the ubber awesome, and super cute, (master) Hirayama.
The film starts off a little slow as it explains the code of the samurai and the heirarachy and politics of the era, but quickly makes up for the delay with a non-stop action packed conculsion. As anyone familiar with Miike's other movies, his films are not for the faint of heart, these are unabashedly told in gritty, gory detail, borderline nauseating, but it's the closest thing to live-action Anime, so you know I'm a fan!!! :D.
