Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Debobrata H — 18 Oct 2011
Takeshi Miike's prolific output has jumped all over the place from the sadistic (Ichi the Killer) to the bizarre (Gozu) to the impenetrable (Izo) and even to surreal children's movies (Great Yokai War).
13 Assassins is on the face of it his most mainstream film. It builds slowly as a traditional piece with the honourable Samurai joining together to face the evil Lord Naritsugu. Then as battle commences, it flips into high gear, the action coming thick and fast.
And what a battle it is! 13 heroes up against an army of 200. Epic. As the nasty Naritsugu says, "It's magnificent. With death comes gratitude for life. If a man has lived in vain, then how trivial his life is.
".
