Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Rob F — 28 Nov 2011
This is an average swordplay movie. It's not, as everyone seems to believe, as good as "The Seven Samurai." Not close. It's a gloss of "serious film," over an average action picture.
The characters are the usual archetypes anyone who's watched "47 Ronin" or really and World War II buddy movie will be familiar with. the grizzled vet who puts the team together. The ace-in-the-hole with a past.
The kid. The ne-er do well looking to be part of something bigger. It's not a bad movie. But it certainly isn't a great one. And I have to admit I'm getting tired of the free pass these movies get.
Japan is a modern country with indoor plumbing and hot towels and everything else. Why grade them on a different curve?
