Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Tim S — 30 Mar 2012
Takashi Miike digs in and gets his hands dirty with the feudal Japan samurai epic 13 Assassins, and the results are spectacular. Comparisons can easily be made to The Seven Samurai, at least in the plotting, but this film packs an action wallop like few films of today can actually deliver.
It dares to mix mostly old school effects techniques with some impressive modern ones that blend wonderfully to help create one of the greatest action set pieces of any film - possibly ever. Nearly 1/3 of the film is dominated by one enormous battle between 13 samurais and 200 warriors in a very small area and as the bloodbath ensues, wow, is it ever breathtaking.
I was glued to my seat during the whole of the film. This is modern filmmaking at its best and 13 Assassins doesn't disappoint. Highly recommended to anyone itching for a compelling action piece.
