Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Cory K — 04 Apr 2012
Got to give Miike credit, here. I watched this at the E Street Theatre last spring, and had one of those moments where I was truly happy to have a strong amount of knowledge of Japanese cinema. He hit this out of the park with the way he connected to Kurosawa.
He treated this movie like a musical score where he started in one thematic place, moved to the next, then the next, then tied it all together in a really ingenious way. Not so much a great movie in itself, but so in the way he deftly directed it and tied thematic and tonal elements from his own repertoire as well as Kurosawa's, then merged the two, then during the last segment broke away and presented his own movement.
anyways...i digress.
