Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by William H — 17 May 2012
It might have been an off-day for me, but it wasn't impressive; the action was sound, but everything else amounted to nothing special. I wonder if part of its acclaim was from people who went in loving Miike.
..and came out, unsurprisingly, loving Miike. The villain whose mannerisms and demeanor aped the main unhinged swordsman from Sword of Doom was great. But the whole film just didn't pull me in; a run-of-the-mill Zaotichi flick is in someways better thant this because I gave a crap about Zaotichi -- he's a funny dude, especially for a blind masseuse/ronin! Of the 13 assassins, the primitive hick who was good with the slingshot stood out, but the rest seemed like pretty straightforward knockoffs of the 7 samurai.
It WAS good though, it just wasn't great. Nowhere near the best movies of 2011.
