Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Nic B — 08 Jun 2012
Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins is a fast movie. It zips by you with the greatest of ease and takes us for a rather enjoyable ride along this bloody path of vengeance. Actually, to be quite honest, I much prefered the build up to the fight, than the overlong, extended battle sequence which takes up the films final third (or even possibly its last half).
The film is so entertaining before the ultimate showdown in a village on the outskirts of a major province, that I almost wished the film had just been about the build up and skipped the bulk of the fight.
I suppose when you have 13 super warriors who only die after they each have sliced their way through roughly 20 men a piece (and in quick succession one after the other once we feel as though this battle is going nowhere) you tend to find yourself experiencing the slightest feelings of battle fatigue.
The end was rather anti-climactic and, of course, predictable. But not all of a films entertainment value is based on its pradictability. And that is what this film is, pure entertainment.
