Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Parker S — 26 Jun 2012
I was definitely not disappointed by the critical acclaim that this movie got. See, the movie was split into two parts. The first part, shows the horror of the horrible lord, and the banding together of a group of samurais that seek to kill the leader before he becomes the shogun.
There are some pretty horrific scenes up front that will make you cringe and hate the leader. All you want to happen is see this guy die, which is where the second half of the movie comes in. In a small town, the samurai set up traps, explosions, and flaming bulls, to thin down the 13:200 ratio of men.
Basically the second half is like 300, but with sword play and awesome choreography. While the first hour develops some awesome characters with some great performances that you can just believe in, the second hour is a spectacle like I have never seen before.
The action scenes were fluid and intense and extremely gory. The sounds were vivid and gross, and besides a pretty bad CG sequence of stampeding bulls, the action simply does not cease. Not one moment are you not enthralled in both parts, which is rare to say nowadays.
A magnificent movie.
