Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Jeffrey F — 03 Dec 2012
Takashe Miike's best to date, just ahead of Audition. I'm already on board since it's a Jidaigeki. And it's done so seriously. 13 Assassins is divided up discretely between cause and effect, fuse and explosion.
For a film with so much violence, its very neatly done. The bad guy is presented as very disagreeable, the heroes as noble and devoted, the sense of place is established with scenes in gambling houses, backrooms, traditional homes, lush courtyards, and the grandiose Japanese mountains, and then the audience is rewarded with an epic battle that would put Three Amigos to shame.
No nonsense film making.
