Review of 13 (2010) by Michael V — 09 Nov 2011
This doesn't hold a candle to the original European version but it still is worth watching if this sort of thing grabs your attention if you can't find the Russian film. The original director comes on board but it feels like he wasn't able to make the film he wanted.
First off making it color really changed the entire tone of this. It worked so much better with the black & white. Second off why cast 50 Cent. The man is an abomination to the acting world. There was no reason to put him here.
Just felt like they had some extra cash laying around and felt to get a well known name for his role instead of an unknown that could have used it. He is worthless in movies. Every single one he is in.
Rourke plays his usual tough guy. Nothing new but it works nice. Michael Shannon is always a nice touch to a movie. Making Statham and Winstone brothers was a brilliant idea. Why hasn't this happened before? Another reason why this fails (though it tried) was that I didn't give a shit if someone died or not.
Most of the ones who do die are faceless. You never meet them you barely get a look at their face. Then the way it all ended it felt incomplete. They started a few subplots but never followed through.
Itâ(TM)s like writing a letter on a postcard and running out of space right when you get to the important stuff and just end it there. This just didn't grab me like the original did. Find that if you can and skip this.
If you can't find it then settle for this because it is a cool twist on the death games approach.
