Review of 127 Hours (2010) by Jarrett M — 18 May 2012
127 Hours is a good film and is anchored by a great performance by James Franco. Which is a good thing, seeing as how he spends the majority of the film alone on screen. However, James Franco is probably not the most captivating actor to spend 90 minutes with.
The story isn't exactly very deep as this is essentially one guy trapped in one location, and those familiar with Aron Ralston's story will probably wonder how this would be interesting to watch.
It more or less provides an insight into Ralston's pysche and his ultimate decision to free himself, or remain trapped and die. The final several minutes of the film pull no punches and are difficult to watch, nearly overshadowing the film's message of hope and the human will to survive.
There is plenty of beautiful desert scenery and the film is very well shot, but there is also a lot of bizarre imagery as Ralston starts to lose his marbles. A movie I would recommend watching once, for a solid performance and an uplifting message, but once will probably be enough as there is also some harrowing imagery that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
