Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Brian K — 16 Oct 2015
Steve McQueen redeems himself after the disappointing Shame with this beautifully photographed and very well acted dramatisation of Solomon Northup's diary detailing his appalling kidnap and enslavement.
Arguably more shocking than the relentless violence is the casual racism and hatred. Reminiscent at times of Terrence Malick, it's astonishing to learn it was shot in just 35 days.
