Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Eric C — 31 May 2014
I really wanted to love this movie. Unfortunately, I just couldn't do it. I liked it and enjoyed parts of it, but it wasn't the great sweeping epic I was hoping for after reading the book. Some of the acting (Ejiofor, Fassbender, Cumberbatch, Giamatti, Pitt, the girl who played Patsy) was fantastic.
Some of the minor characters were like they just swept up people from the community theater and were really bad. They could have done a lot more with this story. That being said, it was much better than some of the other nominees I saw this year (although I think Her should have won), but it had to be the weakest Best Picture winner in years.
It just was a bad year for movies. The music was great.
