Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Eytan D — 01 Jun 2014
There have been several movies about slavery, but "12 Years a Slave" offers the most brutal and honest portrayal ever committed to celluloid. Director Steve McQueen is an incredibly talented, shameless filmmaker who takes risks and has no problem exposing the truth about real evil in the 1800's.
For that, he deserves every accolade. The script is incredible and the costume/production design is stellar, but the movie works because of an incredible ensemble. Chiwetel Ejiofor offers an exemplary piece of emotionally devastating acting, and Michael Fassbender is equal in that degree.
Sarah Paulson and Benedict Cumberbatch are standouts as well, but the biggest surprise is newcomer Lupita Nyong'o as Patsy, who walked away with the Oscar for good reason. She's one to keep an eye on.
"12 Years a Slave" is a very hard film to sit through, but it is no less moving, inspiring, and real. Best movie of the year, without a doubt. It's a film no one is ever going to forget.
