Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Fernando F — 06 Jun 2014
Packed with a very talented cast, wonderful direction by Steve McQueen, a highly emotional and painful story and highly realistic but brutal detail of slavery, 12 Years a Slave proves itself worthy of its Academy Award for Best Picture.
Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance stands solid and is deserving for a Best Actor nomination, but Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender give out the key performances that stand as the best of the film. Steve McQueen, as you may know him, is notorious for making visually disturbing films and this film is one of them, plus it's about slavery. So you should be really prepared because what you will see in this movie is far from comfortable viewing and people under 17 definitely can't watch it.
While the film has lack of comfortable viewing, it is at the same time emotionally devastating, especially the ending that made me feel tears inside of me. And it's hard to watch because it's based on true events. But the movie is very well-done in many aspects and it's highly original. It's that kind of film that you can really connect with and show you parts of what it was like to be a slave. I give this film a perfect five-star rating. Truly worthy for Best Picture.
