Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Ryan V — 07 Sep 2014
This is one of those movies that I would not dare call entertaining. But it's important and necessary viewing, on par with Schindler's List. A marvelous cast is on full display, with star Ejiofor as the anchor.
He, and supporting actress Nyong'o, won richly deserved Oscars. Ejiofor in particular brings a vulnerability and expressiveness that go beyond reciting dialogue. Also, credit must go to the source material (an autobiography written by Solomon Northup himself) and the superb directing of Steve McQueen.
The film is brutal and stark, but is essential viewing for all people.
