Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Alden P — 15 May 2015
A rare moment in cinema when a filmmaker creates a movie that is not only of great import, but is truly film art. Steve McQueen achieves both. This film is almost flawless on all levels. It is also a brutal, disturbing and realistic depiction of the horrors of slavery.
While the film is a true story and takes place in the 1800's every single scene is all too relevant to an ongoing struggle. A highly artistic, potent and unforgettable film. It should be noted that several scenes are quite difficult to watch.
