Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Siphamandla G — 18 May 2015
12 Years a Slave is a passionate and emotional film on the inequality and cruelty of slavery. Following the story of a free man Solomon, acted perfectly by Lupita Nyongo'o, it encompasses many views of the slave industry; the sympathizers, the victims, the perpetrators, and the free-riders.
It is a raw take on human brutality and can be difficult to watch at times. Steve McQueen has created this film with great ability, although at times, the cutting seems awkward and the music is not as powerful as it could be.
12 Years a Slave is a movie that had to be made and rightfully has a different impact on each viewer.
