12 Years a Slave is a 2013 period drama film and an adaptation of the 1853 slave narrative memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free African-American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into slavery. Northup worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release.

This was a very well directed and acted film. It was also very difficult to watch at time.

The film deserved it's Best Picture Win. I think this film should be viewed by everyone over the age of 15 (any younger and it may become to intense for some viewers). It gives you a darker look at slavery and what these folks went through. It also shows you that no matter what nightmares we may be put through, the strength that we have inside will allow us to survive.

Excellent film and ranked among my top 10 favorite period piece films. But again, I warn you, there are scenes that are very difficult to sit through. If you are easily bothered by torture and violence, then you may want to skip this.
