Definitely not light viewing, 12 Years A Slaves depicts, often brutally, a shameful period of America's history. Based on the true story of a free man kidnapped and forced into slavery, this film is, at times, difficult to watch.
Having said that, I think everyone should see it. I'll never understand how a human being can treat another human being like that yet so many in that time seemed to think it their right to do so. This movie deserved it's Oscar.
The only thing bad about it is there was ever a reason to make it. A must see.
