12 Years A Slave is a surprisingly underwhelming movie. It is more of a string of vignettes about several heartless and evil white men (and women) who are just mean without the motivation of running a plantation on their minds.
There is very little character development and most of the film relies on what the audience already knows and feels about slavery. There's no feeling of a journey or even time passing.
