Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Isaac H — 27 Aug 2014
I think being told by the accompanying publicity that this was "one of the best films ever made" tainted this for me slightly. It's a good looking, occasionally beautiful but harrowing movie that deals with its subject matter well but suffers slightly from a lack of masterful story telling.
A big leap forward for Steve McQueen and some strong turns from the cast, although Brad Pitt's appearance seemed self-serving and unnecessary.
