Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Owen R — 19 Feb 2015
First I would like to say that slavery was and is a horrible, horrible thing. This is truly a sad story and depressing to think America was like that, however it's part of history and does need to be told.
Now with that being said I had high expectations going into this movie. I know I'm far from the norm on this but I feel the movie was disappointing & overrated. Don't get me wrong the acting was excellent, but the story for me moved painfully slow.
I was expecting to be moved and emotional but there were far to many slow periods that allowed boredom to set. Although most will disagree the very small crowd that saw it with me (less then 10) did feel the same.
I notice 2 people sleeping and one couple about the midway point for what ever reason walk out and not return. I struggled giving this movie even 3 stars as for myself a three star rating means I will watch movie more then once, however I can't imagine ever being able to sit through this film again.
The acting was very strong and the story is there, but in my view the slowness was just to powerful and overshadowed this movie for me.
