Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Michael L — 10 Oct 2015
This was an excellent film. But something about it makes me uneasy, and I'm not talking about the harrowing events and situations portrayed. I get the sense that this film is at least partially calculated to manipulate viewers into disarming their critical reactions in the interest of safe solidarity.
In other words, criticizing any aspect of it feels like rooting against its righteous message, or rationalizing its portrayed evils, or not being against slavery enough. I think the film's wild critical success owes something to this factor.
It's almost as if it, or its passionate advocates, pressure us to suppose that if we're enlightened, we will necessarily think this is a great film instead of an excellent one.
