Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Kim B — 01 Jul 2015
Talk about depressing. Although I mean the title didn't sound cheerful, I didn't realize that it was about a freeman who was kidnapped. The fact that the lead character was free makes it all the more relatable/terrible watching this.
It's based on a true story of a free black man who got sold down the river literally. The story just gets worse and worse until the very end, but even then we find out justice wasn't handed down in the courts against his perpetrators.
The kind of movie that breaks your heart and is so convincing you see ur self in the main character. Set against the beautiful southern backdrop of nature it's hard to comprehend the evil going on down there.
You keep waiting for his story to get better but for a long time it just gets harder and more soul crushing. Some terrible villains in this movie and terrible to think that this happened, but history isn't pretty.
I felt terrible for patsey and worried what would happen to her and the others left behind. This film doesn't shy away from being uncomfortable and chooses to linger there instead. It wasn't just the slavery but also the Inhumane treatment were the bad ppl tried to always make them feel nothing n the constant oppression n hopelessness that really tears at u.
Stellar performances, amazing story, beautiful cinematography, realistic costumes, settings, great script...well done.
