Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Garrett S — 16 Feb 2016
Based on the work of Northup himself, the film is a portrait of the courage and resilience of a man versus the cruelty of so many others.
McQueen directorial approach is sober and straightforward, not sparing the viewer of the horrors of the slavery period.
The performances are superb, with the supporting cast shining more Ejiofor, especially newcomer Lupita as the slave Patsey.
It's an overlong and almost tiring film - especially for its contemplative moments - but no less impactful. An important history lesson.
The film won 3 Oscars: best picture, adapted screenplay and supporting actress.
