Review of 12 Angry Men (1957) by Tim S — 18 Oct 2013
12 Angry Men is fast-making its way onto my top favorite movies list. Honestly, this is one of the most riveting and more original movies ever made. It comes from a script written by Reginald Rose that was originally produced for TV but brought to the big screen by Rose, Henry Fonda and the great Sidney Lumet (his first film).
It also stars a wealth of familiar faces from Fonda to Lee J. Cobb, E.G. Marshall, Jack Klugman, Martin Balsam and others. Technically, it's not a courtroom drama. It's actually all about what goes on in the jury room and focuses on little else.
That sounds like a potential for disaster but with powerful themes, terrific dialogue, riveting performances, fantastic direction and marvelous cinematography, it winds up being a masterpiece, and one that was overlooked at the time of its release.
