Review of 12 and Holding (2006) by Ryan D — 05 Aug 2007
This movie is not ground breaking, but it is not utter crap either. A dark satire about growing up in the suburbs this movie will not make you laugh out loud nor will it make you cry. It will however catch you off guard, tug at your insecurities, make you think, and ultimately leave you feeling uncertain about how life twists and turns. Many people do not like that. I enjoy the challenge to my sense of normalcy.
I can understand how the 'romance,' if you can call it that, between Malee and the construction worker made some people uncomfortable. That is the point though. Without it two of the characters plights are not resolved: Malee's astranged relationship with her mom and the construction workers inner turmoil.
The movie is comparable to a drawn out version of American Beauty. If you have the patience for an introspective curiosity with brooding undertones you may will enjoy this film. Of course, most people do not go to the movies for that sort of thing.
