Review of 11:14 (2004) by Ivan C — 07 Jan 2009
"Welcome to Middleton: A Crappy Place to Live", and so the subtlety begins. A town that "is dead after 9PM", apparently explaining why its only residents are about 15 cold blooded, apathetic, and selfish people who lack remorse of any kind for participating, witnessing, or covering up any of these murders.
Nothing clever or hidden in this movie, as every five minutes we are shown an extreme close-up of a clock telling us the time, reminding us of the big payoff at 11:14. A gimmick beat to death so early into the film you believe Marcks has less respect for his dead trick than his characters do for the actual dead.
The score composed by Clint Mansell, who has done excellent work with Aronofsky films, is one of the worst scores I've ever heard (and I'm not one to put huge emphasis on score.) The score reminds me of a cheap horror/alien movie combined with a low budget teen comedy, and rounded off with elements of the revived Pink Panther.
It did keep my attention, and I found it interesting enough. But if you want a FANTASTIC film like this, watch Elephant instead. And finally, Rachel Leigh Cook mmmm, Hillary Swank ewwww.
