Review of 11:14 (2004) by Michael V — 28 Jan 2010
Dark, edgy and thoroughly post-modern, 11:14 is one of those "it's-all-connected-in-the-end" tales but with one catch - there's no moral and there's not much of a resolution. The fun of this film mainly lies in seeing how the 'random events' cause and affect one another.
Hilary Swank and Shawn Hatosy in particular provide some excellent and humorous acting. My main criticism with the film is, once the gimmick pays off - what is the redeeming value of a film like this? Basically, it works itself out like a finely designed math problem, and it should be lauded for its meticulous construction, but 11:14 does lack heart.
I don't mean it needs to be happy or have a moral. It just seems to lack a point beyond showing how cool it is that you can make a film like this. But if that's all you're looking for - it's worth a watch.
