Review of 102 Dalmatians (2000) by Dominic F — 03 Sep 2011
The floating, flailing, flying puppies in the inspired opening credits of 102 Dalmatians set the tone for an adorable sequel to the live-action version of the famously spotted cartoon. In every kids' picture, there are going to be sections that only kids will enjoy. Fortunately, 102 Dalmatians has enough for the adults, too. It is Close's performance that gives the movie its oomph and will leave adults with smiles as wide as the kids'. It has everything -- cuddly animals, colorful outfits and sight gags. The film, which is amiable, undemanding family holiday entertainment, is more a tribute to the astonishing skills of the dog trainers than anything else. The climax is a hoot in this big, splashy and colorful movie. It's been carefully built, brick by brick, to be formulaic holiday fun for the whole family. It's nothing new, just the same delightful brew. It's up to you.
VERDICT: "Matinée" - (Mixed reaction). These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says to pay matinée prices to see at a theatre, buy an ex rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own..
