Review of 101 Reykjavik (2000) by Jason P — 14 Apr 2008
Interesting- it's hard for me to be totally objective, because I've been both curious about and fascinated by Icelandic geography and culture for a little while now. I must say, however, that Hlynur did make my Top Ten list of most unappealing protagonists in film. It is nice to see that he had some potential for growth, but even by the end of the film, he's still pretty pathetic. I do realize that my judgment of him goes against what seems to be the primary statement of the film, so maybe his actual character matters less than the point the writer was trying to make.
The film is great for its insight into contemporary Icelandic life, though. I loved it for that.
