Review of 100 Feet (2008) by A. N — 17 Jan 2009
Eric Red's return to horror is something to be applauded, but ultimately, his new film 100 Feet fails to generate anything in the same vein that made his past films so memorable. What we have here is a so-so ghost story with a troubling execution. First of all, Famke Janssen should be applauded for a wonderful performance, which only proves that she should be worth more in Hollywood. Janssen's character, Marnie, however, is a little bit less worthy of applause. In the film, Marnie does some of the stupidest things I've ever seen in a genre film. First of all, she never seems to be very frightened about the ghost of her dead husband, just merely pissed off. The ghost himself, when in the shadows, is quite creepy, but once we learn about Marnie's seeming indifference to the ghost, he becomes far less frightening. There's one really good scare involving the ghost's first reveal and some moderate suspense, including a doozy of a scene involving a garbage dispenser, but that's not enough and 100 Feet tends to falter quite a bit along the way to its "climax.".
Check this out for Janssen! 100 Feet never manages to generate the level of suspense and scares that a movie like this needs, still, it's worth a late night T.V. viewing.
