Review of 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) by Heidi G — 16 May 2013
This contemporary telling of Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' (written c. 1590) is notable for kick-starting a new genré of romantic comedies as well as launching the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
'10 Things' succeeds with strong chemistry between a charming, broad-smiling Ledger and a confident Stiles, whose characters we genuinely care for. The sub-pot involving Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik is also well done without being as captivating.
Complimented by a great soundtrack and a self-conscious cheesiness, this will get a big thumbs up from its target audience.
