Review of 10 Items or Less (2006) by Chay T — 02 Mar 2008
This clever and touching story about how people relate to each other despite class, race or gender. Morgan Freeman essentially plays himself, in a fictional situation in which he is stranded at a market in a small largely hispanic community in California.
He is struck by the a strong willed, razor sharp minded cashier, who is sick of her current circumstances but lacks the self confidence to change things. Morgan Freeman has never been so likeable as a character, and that is really saying a lot considering his roles in Shawshank, Driving Miss Daisey and Million Dollar Baby.
Paz Vega is tough as nails on the exterior, but shows immense vulnerability beneath her character hard exterior. She is wounded, broken and supremely sympathetic. I loved this movie, and the "Making Of" in the bonus material was fascinating.
It is also directed by Brad Silberling, of Lemony Snickets.
