Review of 10 Items or Less (2006) by Daniel L — 09 Jan 2010
If Spanglish wasn't enough for you to fall in love with Paz Vega, than 10 Items or Less is what will seal the deal.
Morgan Freeman stars as a Hollywood actor that has been out of the game for a few years has come back to check the possibility for a return role to the indy films. Paz Vega is a poor Latina cashier working at a grocery store. A little familiar with Spanglish exchanging the actor for a chef, but with more feeling. With only 1 hour 7 minute run time, you find yourself not wanting this safe and fun movie to end.
The beauty of the movie is, it was never over done. You never felt that Freeman's character is overly friendly. Paz Vega's character wasn't overly pitiful or spiteful. Jonah Hill's part in the introduction builds a great feel for Freeman's character.
The most amazing scene in the movie happens on the way to the interview, a backseat view of nothing but Freeman and Vega's heads facing the road, but instead of recognizing their face and reading the signs, you feel the emotion, the true acting comes out. If I could only pick 10 Items or Less, I'd save room for this movie.
