Review of 10 Items or Less (2006) by Mike M — 24 Mar 2010
It's around an hour before you realise what this appealingly casual, lowish-budget feature is going for: a "Before Sunrise"-ish vibe... Freeman and Vega clearly aren't Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy - while championing the delights of high-protein fast food, they end up burping at one another - and their characters are more obviously constructions than those of "Sunrise" or "In Search of a Midnight Kiss", its streetwise L.
A. equivalent; it's a regurgitation of some form, certainly. Still, it comes as a further surprise when "10 Items or Less"'s credits roll to discover its director is Brad Silberling of "Casper" and "City of Angels" fame; shot by Phedon Papamichael, it has an almost documentary-like feel for the colour and textures of its particular blue-collar, Hispanic quarter of Los Angeles.
