A clever approach to a sequel, and effective overall. A scrappy heroine and a keep-you-guessing plot can take a film only so far, though. Eventually the bed gets lifted and all the monsters have to be revealed.
Kudos to Goodman for playing a tough role well and to the filmmakers for making me willing to support a trilogy.
