Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Lenny R — 28 Dec 2016
I wasn't a fan of Cloverfield, but this is a completely different kind of film, not a sequel at all, really. And it's one of the best thrillers I've seen in recent memory. It just keeps laying on the suspense, but messes with your expectations, making you think it's OK to breathe, but then giving you MORE suspense.
It's claustrophobic. It's even pretty funny at times. The characters are compelling and human. But it wouldn't have worked as well as it does without two lead actors as good as MEW and John Goodman bringing those characters to life.
That supremely emotionally expressive face of Winstead's gets possibly the biggest workout it's ever had, and Goodman is by turns chummy, awkward and creepily sinister. I was riveted the whole time, which I was not when watching Cloverfield.
