Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Ian W — 14 Sep 2017
Towards the start I found myself on the edge of my seat, which slowly wore off. By the end of the film the best way to express myself in words would be, wait... so that's it? Nothing was really explained, nor was there any sort of closure, I felt cheated by the end.
It was as suspenseful as any good thriller should be, keeps you on your toes, but its downside in my opinion would be that it didn't seem to have a point. I wouldn't say don't watch this film, it definitely had its entertaining moments, just don't expect too much from it. It seems to be a good start to which I presume a story arc will be made, hopefully it starts to explain things rather than just glossing past explanations. I feel like I've watched a TV show Pilot episode, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not what I look for in a movie.
After a second viewing I feel I went into the film wrongly, expecting a prequel to Cloverfield, I felt cheated more than anything with not getting it. As a film by itself it's great, just it does nothing for the Cloverfield story. I enjoyed it both times, the second time more, as I was just watching it as a film rather than a follow on to a story or a universe. It's sometimes hard to see a film as just that, with all the universes floating around Hollywood these days, it's easy to get ahead of yourself.
