Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Facebook U — 05 Feb 2018
John Goodman is good in everything he's in. Some of the movies he chooses might not be, but he's always good. I don't think "10 Cloverfield Lane" is a terrible movie. In fact, there were quite a lot of things I liked about it, like how tense it felt at times, and (of course) John Goodman's performance. But it had such a weak first twenty minutes, and the other two main performances just weren't believable, so I just wasn't able to get all that into it.
It felt like a film that wanted to be two different movies at once. One of those movies was a revolutionary, genre-defying thriller, and the other was a sci-fi homage. Mix that with a general lack of knowledge regarding how normal humans behave and feel and you get this. There also seemed to be some building up to a twist throughout, but there never really was one.
And again, this isn't a bad movie. John Goodman (the saving grace) was able to keep his scenes engaging enough and watchable. And the tense parts, where I thought it might be building to something, were very interesting. Actually, the pacing was pretty good overall as well. I think they're might've just been some sort of poor connection between the director and a general understanding of the film. I think he might've wanted it to be something it isn't, and maybe he couldn't quite articulate to his crew how the audience should be feeling. I'm not sure. I just know that something is off, and the movie doesn't feel personal or living.
