Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Steven C — 09 Oct 2016
This has nothing to do with the found footage film Cloverfield. It is in fact a complete refreshing genre change. Howard(John Goodman) is a doomsday prepper who holds Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winestead) against her will in his underground bunker.
Most of the movie is trying to figure out if Howard is holding Michelle for a sick game or to protect her from the chemical gas and apocalyptic events happening in the real world. Goodman plays the morally cloudy character but who surprised me was Mary Elizabeth Winestead.
She has done lighter roles in the past and it seem like over the last year or so, Winestead has shown more range in recent years and the mounting projects show it. She was in BrainDead this summer, a civil war period piece drama, and casted in the next season of Fargo.
10 Cloverfield is a thriller that could have been a desperate melodrama but the wonderful cast of a few people made this film somewhat believable. Though not a monster movie like the original, this was a refreshing tone.
Grade: B+.
