Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Mai M — 12 Jun 2013
It makes sense, I suppose, that Lynne Ramsay is reportedly attached to a futuristic reimagining of MOBY DICK, as her WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (A) is cloaked in a sci-fi ether: expressionistic, imagistic, hypnotic.
The color red makes a constant guest appearance, the theme of bloodshed ultimately opened up to raw, psychic wounds that refuse to heal. One of 2011's finest directorial and sonic efforts (the latter not merely extending to Jonny Greenwood's score but also to the haunting sound design, to which I will never hear sprinkler systems the same way again).
