Wow, what an amazing movie. I saw this in 1992 and wasn't as into it. Now I think I get it more. It is actually sort of a simple story and reminds me a lot of Herzog's South American/Kinski. Harris is such a perfect actor and in this role he runs all over, chewing the scenery but also underacting.
This is one of few movies that reads like a good book. The Criterion is, of course, perfect.
