What the movie tries to convey is simple: self-acceptance. How Bunuel shows the pursuit of it is not simple. Bunuel says that if you try to hard to achieve self-acceptance it will be impossible to get it.
By slapping the church in their face Bunuel shows no one, not even the pious, can achieve self-acceptance.
